Jio and Airtel Join Early Global 6G Development Drive with Qualcomm

Jio and Airtel have begun participating in early discussions around the development of 6G technology as global telecom players move toward next-generation wireless networks. The development follows a strategic initiative announced by Qualcomm Technologies at Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2026, where industry partners outlined plans to build AI-native 6G networks with commercial deployment expected around 2029 and beyond.

The Qualcomm-led effort brings together telecom operators, infrastructure providers and technology companies to accelerate research, early testing and ecosystem development for 6G. The initiative focuses on advancing global standards, validating system performance and preparing pre-commercial demonstrations over the next few years.

For Indian telecom operators, early involvement provides an opportunity to influence network architecture design, interoperability frameworks and spectrum planning before large-scale rollout begins. While Jio and Airtel are engaging in the early ecosystem discussions, Vodafone Idea has not publicly indicated participation in the initiative so far.

6G technology is expected to integrate artificial intelligence deeply into network operations, enabling smarter spectrum management, automated traffic optimization and enhanced connectivity performance. Industry experts expect the technology to support advanced use cases including immersive digital experiences and next-generation industrial applications.
