India Set to Introduce E85 Fuel as Next Step in Ethanol Blending Push

The Indian government is preparing to expand its ethanol blending programme with the introduction of draft rules for E85 fuel, a petrol-ethanol mix containing up to 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. According to a report by The Hindu, the draft regulations are expected to be notified soon, signalling a policy shift toward higher ethanol adoption.

A senior government official, quoted in the report, indicated that there is broad consensus within both the government and the market for the rollout of Ethanol 85 (E85). Preliminary testing has also been carried out, suggesting readiness for the next phase of fuel transition.

E85 is likely to be introduced as a separate fuel category, similar to the nationwide rollout of E20 petrol, which contains 20% ethanol. The move represents a continued push by the government to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and increase the share of biofuels in India’s energy mix.

However, the transition to E85 will require significant adjustments in the automotive sector. Existing petrol engines are not designed to handle such high ethanol concentrations, making it necessary for manufacturers to redesign engines, fuel systems, and materials to ensure compatibility and performance.

Nitin Gadkari has been a strong proponent of ethanol-based fuels, consistently highlighting their role in reducing crude oil imports and strengthening energy security. He has also emphasized the potential of ethanol production, derived from crops like sugarcane and maize, to support farmers and boost rural incomes.

Industry experts note that while E85 offers environmental and economic benefits, its successful implementation will depend on the development of supporting fuel infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, and widespread adoption by automobile manufacturers.

The proposed rollout is expected to further accelerate India’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable mobility solutions.
