Perplexity AI to let Indians track politicians’ stock holdings

Perplexity AI is set to launch a new feature on its Perplexity Finance platform that will allow Indian users to view the stock holdings of their politicians, aiming to bring greater transparency to the financial activities of public officials.

The update was confirmed by Perplexity’s CEO, Aravind Srinivas, who announced on X that the feature would be available within the coming weeks. The platform already enables users to track the trading activities of American politicians, and its expansion into India has generated widespread attention and debate online.

Responding to a user’s query about tracking Indian politicians’ investments, Srinivas said, “Holdings of Indian politicians coming in a few weeks.” The upcoming tool is expected to work much like its US version, allowing users to search for equity positions by company or by politician.

In the United States, Perplexity Finance sources its data from official financial disclosure filings. For India, the platform is expected to rely on public records, including annual asset declarations, election affidavits, and mandatory financial disclosures under various regulatory laws.

While the move has been praised for promoting transparency, some users have expressed skepticism. Many pointed out that Indian politicians often hold assets under relatives or benami names, which could limit the tool’s accuracy. Others cautioned Srinivas about the potential political sensitivities of entering this space, with one user commenting, “Better not to get into dirty waters with the Babus; otherwise, we might lose another great product to policy.”
