Shield AI Unveils World’s First AI-Piloted Fighter Jet with Vertical Takeoff Ability

San Diego-based defense tech company Shield AI has introduced the world’s first artificial intelligence-piloted fighter jet, named X-BAT, capable of taking off and landing vertically. This marks a groundbreaking achievement in modern aviation and military technology.

The X-BAT is designed to perform missions in areas where communication or GPS signals are unreliable. Powered by Shield AI’s advanced Hivemind system, the aircraft can make decisions, navigate, and execute missions autonomously without a human pilot. This AI system enables X-BAT to handle air defense, surveillance, and attack operations in complex and high-risk environments.

According to the company, the goal is to create the world’s best AI pilot that can “fly any aircraft, anywhere, anytime.” This ambition highlights Shield AI’s vision of building fully autonomous aircraft capable of functioning safely in contested and dangerous zones.

The X-BAT combines the power of a fighter jet with the agility of a vertical takeoff and landing system, allowing it to operate from small spaces, ships, or remote areas where traditional jets cannot. This flexibility significantly enhances its tactical value for defense missions.

Before X-BAT, Shield AI had developed the V-BAT, an autonomous drone already in use by U.S. forces. With this new innovation, the company has taken a bold step toward the future of AI-driven warfare, redefining what is possible in next-generation air combat.
