India’s Metro Network Achieves 1,000 km Milestone, Becoming World’s Third Largest

India’s urban transportation landscape has reached a significant milestone, with the metro network expanding to 1,000 kilometers, positioning it as the third-largest globally, following China and the United States.

This expansion reflects a decade of rapid growth. In 2014, the metro spanned 248 kilometers across five cities; by 2024, it had grown to 973 kilometers in 23 cities. Currently, over 1,000 kilometers of metro lines are under construction in urban centers including Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Kochi, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Ahmedabad.

The metro’s daily ridership has also surged, increasing from 2.8 million passengers in 2014 to over 10 million in 2024. This growth underscores the metro’s role in enhancing urban mobility and reducing congestion in India’s rapidly expanding cities. Recent developments include the inauguration of a 13-kilometer stretch of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor, enhancing regional connectivity.

Additionally, the Delhi Metro’s Phase-IV expansion is underway, with plans to add 26.5 kilometers connecting Rithala in Delhi to Nathupur (Kundli) in Haryana, further improving access across the National Capital Region. These advancements highlight India’s commitment to developing sustainable urban infrastructure, aiming to provide efficient, affordable, and modern public transport solutions to its citizens. As the metro network continues to expand, it is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of urban mobility in India.
