IndiGo flights to become costlier amid Iran conflict

IndiGo has announced that it will introduce a fuel surcharge on its flight tickets, making air travel more expensive for passengers as global fuel prices surge due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran in the Middle East.

The airline said the additional charge will apply to both domestic and international flights starting March 14. The move comes as aviation turbine fuel prices have sharply increased following geopolitical tensions and disruptions in global energy supply.

According to the airline, the fuel surcharge will range between ₹425 and ₹2,300 depending on the route. Domestic flights and routes within the Indian subcontinent will see a ₹425 increase, while flights to the Middle East will have an additional ₹900 charge. Passengers travelling to Southeast Asia, China, Africa and West Asia will pay ₹1,800 more, and Europe-bound flights will see a ₹2,300 surcharge.

The decision follows a steep rise in jet fuel prices, which have jumped by more than 85 percent in the region due to the ongoing geopolitical crisis. Aviation fuel typically accounts for a significant portion of airline operating costs, forcing carriers to introduce additional charges to manage rising expenses.

Industry reports say the conflict in the Middle East has disrupted energy markets and pushed crude oil prices higher, prompting airlines worldwide to review fares and operational costs.

With the surcharge now in place, passengers booking new IndiGo tickets can expect higher fares across most routes as airlines attempt to offset the financial impact of rising fuel costs.
