Elon Musk Unveils $25 Billion TeraFab Chip Factory in Texas

Elon Musk has unveiled plans for TeraFab, a massive $25 billion semiconductor manufacturing facility to be developed at the Giga Texas campus in Austin. The project is a joint initiative involving Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, aiming to vertically integrate chip design, manufacturing, and testing under a single ecosystem.

The TeraFab facility is designed to reduce reliance on external semiconductor suppliers by enabling end-to-end chip production in-house. This approach is expected to minimize supply chain disruptions while giving Musk’s companies greater operational control and speed in innovation. The chips produced will primarily support autonomous vehicles, humanoid robotics, and next-generation AI infrastructure.

A major focus of the project is the development of advanced 2-nanometer chips, including a specialized D3 variant engineered to withstand extreme space environments. The facility is projected to generate up to one terawatt of computing power annually, significantly scaling up production capacity compared to current industry standards.

Notably, around 80% of the chips are expected to be allocated for space-based applications. SpaceX plans to deploy these chips into orbit to establish solar-powered AI data centers, marking a shift toward extraterrestrial computing infrastructure.

Construction activity has already begun in Texas, with recruitment efforts accelerating. The project is expected to be primarily funded by SpaceX and xAI, both part of a broader $1.25 trillion combined entity preparing for a potential public listing.

However, the initiative faces significant technical challenges. Leading semiconductor manufacturers such as Samsung and Intel are still grappling with the complexities of 2-nanometer fabrication. TeraFab will also require highly specialized machinery costing up to $400 million, along with extreme precision in production processes.

If successfully executed, TeraFab could become one of the most ambitious and capital-intensive projects led by Elon Musk, potentially redefining semiconductor manufacturing and AI infrastructure both on Earth and in space.
