Google backs Wadhwani AI with ₹85 crore to modernise government education platforms

Google, through its philanthropic arm Google.org, has announced a grant of ₹85 crore to non-profit organisation Wadhwani AI to support the integration of artificial intelligence into India’s government-owned education and skilling platforms. The funding was announced on January 28, 2026, and is aimed at strengthening public digital infrastructure with India-focused AI solutions.

The initiative seeks to embed AI-powered tools into widely used government platforms to improve learning outcomes and administrative efficiency. According to Google, the project will focus on scaling responsible and inclusive AI technologies across the education ecosystem, particularly in areas such as personalised learning, language support and skill development.

As part of the programme, adaptive AI solutions will be integrated into platforms like SWAYAM, the government’s online education portal, and the POSHAN Tracker, which is used to monitor nutrition and health outcomes. These tools are expected to help educators deliver more targeted instruction while simplifying processes for learners across different age groups and regions.

Google estimates that the initiative could benefit around 75 million students and 1.8 million educators by 2027. The AI features planned under the project include voice-enabled reading support in multiple Indian languages and AI-driven English language coaching tools designed to improve foundational communication skills.

The funding also aligns with Google’s broader collaborations in India’s education and skilling sectors. The company is working with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship on an AI-enabled state university pilot at Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut. Insights from these initiatives are expected to contribute to a broader framework for modernising India’s public education systems and reducing digital learning gaps.

Google India said the partnership with Wadhwani AI combines technology-driven innovation with research-backed educational approaches, aiming to support teachers and learners while ensuring the responsible use of artificial intelligence across public platforms.
