Elon Musk has praised SpaceX’s satellite internet venture Starlink after the company announced that it has crossed more than 9 million active users worldwide. The high-speed satellite broadband service is now operational across 155 countries, territories, and other markets, marking a major milestone in global internet connectivity.
Reacting to the announcement on X, Musk congratulated the Starlink team and described building an internet network in space as a difficult but remarkable achievement. Starlink also thanked its customers globally, prompting a wave of reactions from social media users who shared excitement, humour, and curiosity about the scale of the project.
While Starlink continues to expand rapidly, concerns have emerged around potential security threats. A report cited by Financial Express suggested that Russia may be developing a new anti-satellite weapon aimed at disrupting Starlink operations. The weapon is said to use clouds of orbiting debris to interfere with satellite networks.
Starlink has played a crucial role in Ukraine during the ongoing conflict, supporting military communication and helping maintain essential services such as hospitals and government operations when infrastructure was damaged. Intelligence findings referenced by The Associated Press indicate that any large-scale attack on satellites could create severe and uncontrollable disruptions in space.
Experts have warned that such actions could backfire, as space debris would not remain confined to one country’s assets. An attack on Starlink could also impact Russia, China, and other nations that depend heavily on satellites for communication, defence, and navigation, increasing the risk of long-term instability in Earth’s orbit.
